The year on year increase of ecommerce

Lack of time, convenience, tha variety, the almost automatic knowledge of promotions

In 2017 more than 36% of Portuguese consumers made purchases online, equating to a total value of 4.6 billion euros. According to the Study of the Digital Economy in Portugal, developed by ACEPI, in partnership with IDC, international technology consultant, it is expected that:

  • more than half of the Portuguese will buy online in 2025,
  • the value of purchases will amount to 8.9 billion euros.

Despite the upward trend in ecommerce on Portuguese sites, 50% were still made outside Portugal.

According to the study, 85% of Portuguese consumers who buy online have already done so on foreign websites. China is already the country where the Portuguese buy from more often. The most used sites for purchases are eBay, Amazon and AliExpress, of the Chinese Alibaba. On ecommerce the most purchased items are clothing, mobile equipment and accessories, and computer equipment.

According to the study, by 2020 more than half of the world’s population will use the Internet and by 2025, 68.4% of the world’s 7 billion people will be online. Of these, 36.7% will  shop online.
